Proposed by Matthew Daley (VPEW) and Dilly Rehal (President)
Guild Senate
Background
The Guild went through a major review in the last academic year and formulated a strategic plan to focus on its support services, student involvement opportunities and representation. The Guild has recognised that its structures for enabling good student representation to both the University and the Guild need to be reviewed and that enabling the student voice and engaging with the student body regarding the student experience are of the utmost importance and are a requirement of the QAA.
What is it?
The Guild Senate will be a forum and communication tool comprising of Postgraduate and Undergraduate student representatives from each School, Combined Honours, the Guild President, Vice President Education and Welfare, Student Representation officer and the university Pro Vice-Chancellor for Learning, Teaching and Innovation.
What is its purpose?
The purpose of Guild Senate will be to gain invaluable (both positive and negative) feedback from student representatives from each of the schools and combined honours regarding the quality of current learning and teaching methods and the student experience at Aston and communicating this directly to the University and Guild Executive and the university Student Affairs Committee.
The Guild Senate will also provide training on how to be a good student representative, provide opportunities to share best practice, ideas and problem solving and an annual away day which will feed into the ongoing development of the University and Guild strategy.
What will it achieve?
· Provide an invaluable two-way communication tool between the University and the Student Body.
· Provide a greater accountability of the University and Guild by the student body.
· Provide another mechanism for the Guild to reach out to certain pockets of a segmented student body and be a truer representative organisation.
· Provide opportunities for innovation and sharing of good practice.
· To have consultation with the schools, university, Guild council and current student representatives in December 2007 and January 2008.
· To have Guild Senate established into the Guild Constitution by 14th February 2008.
· To have the first meeting of Guild Senate on 19th February 2008.
· To have the second meeting of Guild Senate on 29th April 2008.
· To organise an ‘Away Day’ on 3rd June 2008.
