At the start of the term, we sent out a Term One Review survey, to get your feedback on how certain aspects of the Guild had operated over the first term. Below is some of the Guild's responses to the comments given:
Over half of the respondents used the Guild website but many commented that they found that it was regularly out of date and had little useful information on the website. It was also noted that the “Talk to the Exec” chat function was often 'offline'.
Response -
We will try to ensure that the website is updated regularly and hold the correct information. During term 2, a policy has been put into place to prompt the Exec to ensure that they are signing in to the chat function regularly to enable students to communicate with them.
There was a large variety of comments regarding students involvement within the sports clubs and societies at Aston.
Response - These have been passed on to the Vice President Student Involvement to take into consideration and where necessary, pass on to the individual clubs and societies.
The main recommendations that came from this question was the following
More seating in the main hall
Use the bottle/shot bar more/ more drinks offers
Cheaper entry
Alternate night the event is held on
Less smoke/haze from smoke machine
Block Party appeared to receive the most complaints.
Response -
More seating is possible and will be looked into for the next event
The bars are run by the University and not the Guild, we will pass this information on
Cheaper entry – sadly we are unable to lower the cost of entry due to the costs we incur by running the event. In addition, if we charged less, we would not be able to afford to get any acts or activities into the events.
Alternate night – this will be taken into consideration when organising future events
Less smoke – this comment has been passed on to the Entertainments Committee
Block Party was an external event that was running in its first year. It was agreed by all that the event was not up to the standard expected and as a result, the Guild will be not be getting involed with it next year
There was a lot of positive feedback regarding the paper with just a few recurring suggestions being made:
Better distribution
More proof-readers
More features on sports clubs and socs
Improved layout/ more content
Response -
Over term 2, the paper has begun to be distributed further both on and off of campus. The editor has also recruited more proof-readers to ensure that the paper has less errors.
The comments regarding sports clubs and societies has been passed onto the Student Activities Executive who intend on writing a piece in the near future.
Layout and conent comments have been passed onto the editor for her consideration
As with the Aston Times, there were many positive comments, with just a few criticisms:
It is too cliquey and little anonymity
Needs to be more regular and better distributed
Response -
Whilst as much attempt is given to include as many people as possible within Wotsup, it is only possible to print the 'gossip' that gets sent in. Also by relying on texts, it is hard to tell whether or not people want their names printed (as some make attempts to get as many mentions as possible), so we just have to rely on what we get sent.
Sadly the cost of producing Wotsup on a more regular basis is too expensive
Better distribution is being looked into.
There was a mixed response regarding how people found out about the elections that took place in November, with the main concern was that there was not enough information avaliable.
Response -
For the March elections, the Steering Committee (who run the elections) have already made attempts to ensure information is more readily available to all students, via posters, the internet and e-mails. Throughout the election period, they will be ensuring that as many information is available as possible.
The majority of students made their views clear that they did not agree with the cap being lifted. Aston's Vice-Chancellor is on the advisory board for this and the Guild is making sure that all of the comments shall be passed on to her, so that she can see how everyone feels about the situation. The Guild wants to represent the student views and will continue to fight this.
