if you are planning to start at Aston University
as a home or EU undergraduate in the autumn of 2010
1. How much are the tuition fees?
In your first year they will be £3,290.
They will rise slightly each year by the rate of inflation.
If you take a placement year your tuition fee will be 50% of the normal tuition fee for the placement year and you will receive a placement allowance of £1,000 from the University plus, if you are studying outside the UK or if you take an unpaid placement, an additional £500 placement bursary! Neither amount has to be repaid.
2. Will I be responsible for the payment of the tuition fees? Yes
3. Will I get help to pay the tuition fees?
Yes: you will have the option to apply for a tuition fee loan from the Student Loans Company.
If you choose this option, the Student Loans Company will pay the tuition fees to the university on your behalf.
4. Can I pay the tuition fees if I am able to?
Yes: you can pay the fees yourself and you will have the option of paying in instalments.
The instalments will be 50%, 25% and 25%
5. Will I be able to get a student loan for living costs/maintenance?
As an undergraduate student you will be entitled to a student loan for maintenance, unless you are classed as either an *EU or an International tuition fee paying student.
The maximum student loans for Aston University
students are:
£4,950if you live away from home
£3,838 if you live with parents
N.B. The amount of loan you will be able to borrow will be reduced by 50 pence for every £1of grant (if you receive a grant or partial grant outlined in Section 6)
● A few EU students will be able to take loans for living costs: those who have been in the UK for at least 3 years prior to 1 September 2010.
6. Overall, what money might I be entitled to if I am not living at my family home?
If you are from a low income family (< £25,000 per year)
A grant of £2,906 per year that does not have to be repaid
A living costs loan of £3,497
A tuition fee loan of £3,290
A bursary from Aston University of £800 per year if family income is £18,000 or below or a partial bursary for those whose family income is £18,000 to £25,000The bursary does not have to be repaid.
If you are from a middle income family (£25,001 - £50,020 per year)
A grant of between £2,906 and £50
A living costs loan of between £3,497 and £4,925
A tuition fee loan of £3,290
A partial £800 bursary from Aston up to £39,333 family income. No bursary for those whose family income is above £39,333.
If you are from a family whose income is over £50,020
No grant
No bursary
A living costs loan of between £4,950 and £3,564
A tuition fee loan of £3,290
N.B. Only the tuition fee loan described in section 6 is available to you if you pay tuition fees as an EU student.

7. How do I apply for the financial help?
The student finance application will be aligned with your application for a university place as you apply to UCAS. You should use the Student Finance England web site which will give you a detailed illustration of student finance and other money associated with the courses you are applying for.
You will be able to apply for all your financial help on line or you may complete a paper application form.
As and when you make decisions as to which university and course you choose, Student Finance England will automatically update your finance application.
8. What forms do I need to complete to sort out my Aston University Bursary
No special forms are needed. It will be paid automatically.
9. Is there anything else I need to do about student finance?
You need to open a student bank account in order for your student loans and your student grant (if applicable) to be paid directly into your account.
