You may be asked to register with the police if you are admitted to Britain for more than 6 months.
If you are not sure whether or not you need to register with the police an adviser at the Guild's Advice & Representation Centre can check for you by looking at your passport.
If you need to register your passport will contain the following words
"The holder is required to register at once with the police"
You should register within 7 days of being asked to do so. You need to register at
The Overseas Visitors' Office
Birmingham Police Headquarters
Lloyd House
Colmore Circus
Queensway
Birmingham B4 6NQ
Telephone 0845 113 5000 and ask for extension 2307 or 2308 or 2657

If you do not register with the police, when you have been asked to do so, you will be in breach of your immigration conditions and you may be fined.
You should take your police registration certificate with you whenever you travel in and out of the UK.

If you change your address you must tell the police within 7 days and take with you some proof of your new address such as a letter from the University Accommodation Office or a copy of your tenancy agreement if you have a private landlord.
Any other changes to your circumstances must be reported within 2 months.
If you lose your police registration certificate notify the police immediately. You must apply for a replacement certificate. This will cost £34 (February 2009).
