► Visit visas for your family

Inviting members of your family to visit you

whilst you are in the UK as a full time student.

Family members must apply for a visitor’s visa which is normally given for 6 months even if they plan to be staying with you for only a few weeks. Some visa application centres will only accept online applications. To find out if they must apply online please see Visa4UK

The application forms are on the UK Visas website at http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/howtoapply/vafs/

They need to complete Application Form VAF1B as a family visitor and read the VAF Guidance notes. There is helpful information on line if you click here

It is theoretically possible for your visitors to apply for a General Visitor visa using a VAF1A form but if they are refused, there is no right of appeal. Family visitors using VAF1B forms do have the right of appeal although was expected to cease by the end of 2009 when family visit visa applications would need UK based sponsors who have settled status. However, this change seems to have been delayed.

How can my visitor come to the United Kingdom?
An entry clearance officer must be satisfied that your visitor meets the requirements of the Immigration Rules, which are that:

*                     he or she is seeking entry as a visitor for no more than six months and

*                     he or she intends to leave the United Kingdom on completion of his or her visit and

*                     he or she has enough money to maintain and accommodate himself or herself without working, or help from Public funds (income support, housing benefit, etc.)

What supporting documents should my visitor include with their application?

*                     bank statements, payslips, or some other evidence to show that they can pay for the trip and that they have enough money to support themselves and any dependants without working or getting any help from public funds, and

*                     evidence that they intend to leave the UK at the end of their visit (for example, a letter from their employer).

Because they are visiting you whilst you are a student they will also need:

*                     a letter from you inviting them and explaining the purpose of their visit. The Advice & Representation Centre staff in the Students' Guild can help you write this letter

*                     a copy of your student visa or of your UK Identity card which contains your visa, your passport main page and your police registration certificate.

*                     a status letter from the University confirming your student status at Aston University, the dates of your course and the date of graduation (which will help any family members visiting for your graduation ceremony). You may log onto MAP and order this letter which will be listed under the graduation section of MAP.

I

*     if you have plans (an itinerary) for their visit then write it down and give it to your visitors. For example Day 1 Collect from Birmingham airport. Day 2 Tour of Birmingham shops Day 3 Visit Worcester by train. .Day 4 Coach trip to Warwick castle etc. You can include hotel or tour bookings if you have any.

Students often think they have to sponsor their visitors. This is rarely the case but it you are supporting your visitors financially they will also need your bank statements, or some other evidence to show that you have enough money to support them whilst they are in the UK.

All applicants are required to supply 10 digit finger scans and a digital photograph as part of the applicant process for a UK visa.
