National Minimum Wage
Work experience placements undertaken by students as part of UK based higher education courses or further education courses is exempt from the minimum wage, where the work experience placement does not exceed one year. This means you can legally be paid at a rate lower than the national minimum wage. However Aston University tries to ensure that all work placement students on paid placements do receive more than the national minimum wage and a number of students receive substantially more.
Holiday pay
As a placement student you are entitled to paid holiday of 5.6 weeks per 12 months of employment. This equates to 28 days paid holiday per year. Bank holidays, on which you do not work but on which you are paid, are included in the 28 days.
