Maintenance/funds worth 10 points
►You must *personally have the money to live on and the money for the tuition fees in a bank account in your name, or in a joint account where you are named or
► You must have a loan in your own name or
► You must have official financial or government sponsorship
* You are now allowed to use a bank account in your parents' name provided you also supply your birth certificate and an original signed and dated letter from your parent(s) confirming they are your parent(s) and they consent to their money being used to fund your UK studies. (However, this is an exceptionally difficult option for most students because of all the elements involved and therefore we really do recommend you apply using your own bank account, not your parents' bank account.)
1. Maintenance/funds
►Because you are renewing an existing student visa you have to prove you personally have at least £1,200 in your bank account unless it is more than 4 months since you last studied in which case you need £5,400.
►Your financial proof must cover a 28 day period and be printed no more than one month before the date your application will be made/posted.
►The money must have been in your account for every single moment of the 28 days.
►If your bank account is not in the UK, you must include a conversion of the closing balance to Sterling using the OANDA web site and the exchange rate on the date your bank statement or bank loan was issued.
► If your bank account is not in English you will also need to provide an official translation by a professional translator accompanied by details of the translator’s credentials, confirmation that the translation is accurate, the translator's contact details, the date and the signature of the translator.
2. Tuition fees
►Because you are renewing as an existing student you must be able to prove you have enough money to pay any tuition fees still outstanding for your course if the course has less than one year to run or
enough money to pay the next year’s tuition fees for your course if there is more than one year before your course ends.
3. University accommodation fees
►If you have paid some or all of your accommodation fees to the University, it will be possible to apply with a lower amount in your bank account than the £1,200.
Financial sponsorship means you are being given money the UK government, your home government, the British Council, or any international organisation, company or university to cover your tuition fees and your living costs. If your financial sponsor is only covering some of your fees or living costs, you must show you have the rest of the money you will need.
You must provide a sponsor’s letter on official notepaper, with an official stamp which shows
Your name
The name and contact details of your sponsor
The date of the letter
The length of your sponsorship
A statement that they will cover all your tuition fees and living costs or a statement to say how much money they will give to you.
If this letter is not in English you will need to provide an official translation.
If you are on a University scholarship, the University can put this information into your visa letter.
Documents
►Must be provided at the time of application.
►Must be original
►If not written in English, the document must be accompanied by an official translation by a professional translator accompanied by details of the translator’s credentials, confirmation that the translation is accurate, the translator's contact details the date and the signature of the translator.
►If you require Academic Technology Approval for your course (ATAS) you must include the ATAS certificate with the application.
Proof of qualification by which you were accepted onto the Aston course
This is not needed for visa renewals. Instead the University visa letter will contain an additional sentence to confirm that your visa renewal will allow you to continue your existing course.
However these qualifications will be needed if you are completing a pre-sessional English course.
Submit one photocopy of each document as well as submitting the original documents! We assume this means a copy of your visa letter, your financial proof, your ATAS, your fee receipts etc
Length of visa
If your course is for 12 months or more, your new visa should be issued for the length of your course plus an additional 4 months.
If your course is for more than 6 months but less than 12 months, your new visa will be issued for the length of the course plus an additional 2 months.
