Tier 4 (General) Student of the Points Based immigration system

 

You need a total of 40 points

30 points for a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number issued by Aston University

10 points for having enough money

Please follow this example if you would like the ARC to post your application to the UK Border Agency on your behalf and please complete your Tier 4 form in pencil before coming to see either Jill or Gemma in the ARC.

 

Cost of Tier 4 (G)

It costs £357 to post your application

It costs *£565 if you are in a hurry and want to apply in person at one of the Public Enquiry Offices.

* The cost will rise to £628 from 6 April 2010

 

Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) numbers worth 30 points

►CAS for existing courses will be provided by Aston University provided you are making academic progress and that you have been attending your course. Contact Jill or Gemma in the Advice & Representation Centre who can request the CAS for you.

►CAS for new courses will be provided by the admissions staff in your School of Study at Aston University.

►CAS must be no more than 6 months old on the date you apply for your visa.

► Your student visa will be linked to the University which is your educational sponsor. If your visa has not been sponsored by Aston Univerisity, unfortunately you may not study at Aston University until you have applied for and received a visa for Aston.

 

Money worth 10 points

►You must personally have enough money in a bank account in your name, or in a joint account where you are named   or

►You are allowed to use a bank account in your parents' name provided you also supply your birth certificate and an original signed and dated letter from your parent(s) confirming they are your parent(s) and they consent to their money being used to fund your UK studies. (This is an exceptionally difficult option for most students so we advise you put the money in a bank account in your name) or

► You must have a loan in your own name or

► You must have official financial or government sponsorship

How much money?

1. Maintenance/Tier 4 minimum requirements

►Because you are renewing a visa for an existing course, you have to prove you personally have at least £1,200 in your bank account.  In certain circumstances you will need £5,400. This mainly applies to students who have completed courses of less than 6 months' duration and who now want to study a new course

 ►Tuition fees: Because you are renewing as an existing student you must be able to prove you can afford the tuition fees for the year. Either the money must be in your bank account; or you may pay it to the University; or part pay it to the University, keeping the rest in your bank account.

University accommodation fees: If you have already paid some or all of your accommodation fees to the University, it will be possible to apply with a lower amount in your bank account.

Bank statements

1.  Must not be more than one month old

2.  Must be in your name

3. The bank statement must cover a period of 28 days or more. The amount of money you need / the Tier 4 minimum requirements, must have been in your bank account for every moment of every day of the last 28 days of your bank statement.

►If your bank account is not in the UK, you must include a conversion of the closing balance to Sterling using the OANDA web site and the exchange rate on the date your bank statement or bank loan was issued.

Money for dependants

Your dependants also need to prove they, or you, have £800 in addition to your own Tier 4 minimum requirements.

Financial sponsorship means you are being given money by the UK government, your home government, the British Council, or any international organisation, international company or university to cover your tuition fees and your living costs. If your financial sponsor is only covering some of your fees or living costs, you must show you have the rest of the money you will need.

You must provide a sponsor’s letter on official notepaper, with an official stamp which shows

Your name  / The name and contact details of your sponsor / The date of the letter / The length of your sponsorship / A statement that they will cover all your tuition fees and living costs or a statement to say how much money they will give to you.

Documents (including bank statements)

►Must be provided at the time of application.

►Must be original

►If not written in English, the document must be accompanied by an official translation by a professional translator accompanied by ►If you require Academic Technology Approval for your course (ATAS) you must include the ATAS certificate with the application.

1. details of the translator’s credentials,

2. confirmation that the translation is accurate,

3. the translator's contact details

4. the translator's full name

5. the date and the signature of the translator.

  Proof of qualification by which you were accepted onto the Aston course: This is needed only if you are completing a pre-sessional English course. See below

 Length of visa

If your overall course length is for 12 months or more, your new visa should be issued for the length of your course plus an additional 4 months.

If your overall course length is for more than 6 months but less than 12 months, your new visa will be issued for the length of the course plus an additional 2 months.
